Evelyn Hofer and Richard Lindner, both German, left their home country for New York in the 1940s. Hofer didn’t care much for the Big Apple, which she called an “unhuman city,” while Lindner walked its streets with remove, studying the tall buildings as if he were a casual tourist. Hofer excelled at street photography. Lindner became a renowned painter. In the year that would have marked Hofer’s 100th birthday and Lindner’s 120th, this exhibition places their work side by side. —Elena Clavarino
