Last year would have been Evelyn Hofer’s 100th birthday, but except for an exhibition last summer in Nuremberg, the milestone went mostly unnoticed. Despite her powerful images, Hofer has remained, in the words of The New York Times, “the most famous unknown photographer in America.” Throughout her life she documented cities as disparate as Dublin, Florence, New York, and Washington, D.C., shooting extraordinary pictures of urban landscapes and the people in them. This retrospective spans five decades of Hofer’s career, bringing a necessary spotlight to this under-recognized artist. —Elena Clavarino
