One hundred years ago, Ellsworth Kelly was born in Newburgh, New York, to Allan Howe Kelly and Florence Rose Elizabeth Kelly. He died eight years ago, in 2015, at 92. Kelly was known for hard-edge painting, Color Field painting, and minimalism. “I don’t want to paint things like Picasso’s women and Matisse’s odalisques lying on couches with pillows,” he once said. “I don’t want to paint people. I want to paint something I have never seen before. I don’t want to make what I’m looking at. I want the fragments.” This exhibition in St. Louis spans six decades of Kelly’s practice. —Elena Clavarino
