Edith, meet Emily. Though separated by time and space, Edith Heath (1911–2005) and Emily Carr (1871–1945) were kindred spirits in their affinity with nature. Heath was intimately familiar with clay, knowledgeable about its chemistry in addition to its cultural significance. Carr, inspired by the environment surrounding her, captured the beauty of the earth in landscape paintings that seem to swirl. “From the Earth” pays homage to these two women, revolutionary artists in love with the organic. —Nicole Matthias
