Born in 1910, Dorothea Tanning lived to the age of 101. She was a self-taught Surrealist painter. Also a sculptor, printmaker, and writer. Her second husband was Max Ernst, who was taken with her painting and married her in 1946 (when they met, he was married to Peggy Guggenheim). Over the years, Tanning’s painting loosened and softened, becoming more abstract and suggestive. In her 80s she began writing poetry. Clearly, she was a dynamo. This exhibition presents one of the most comprehensive solo exhibitions of Tanning’s work in decades. —Laura Jacobs
