Donna Huanca: WET SLIT

Streaming on Simon Lee Gallery

“The DNA of the earth,” the artist Donna Huanca said in 2016, “gems, minerals, meteorites, desert landscapes; and hallucinatory states have all taught me about color and its effects on mood.” In this exhibition-installation, draped with icelike clear vinyl, the paintings wear sapphire blues and emerald greens. Huance thinks of her interdisciplinary practice as “original paintings”—they combine sculpture, painting, and performance with video and sound. In this video walkthrough, crackling background noises, like the sound of matches being lit, add heat to a world of watery coolness. —E.C.
