In his book, A Brief History of Curating, Hans Ulrich Obrist quotes Johannes Cladders, “I have always believed that it is the artist who creates a work, but a society that turns it into a work of art.” It was this very thought that led to the inception of Obrist’s 1993 project, ‘do it.’ He asked artists to create instructions that people might follow, and the results are funny, abstract, absurd, concrete, poetic, and playful. All seem to point toward a new perspective, an imaginative leap, the stuff of art. During the pandemic, ‘do it’ has been revived. This online iteration includes interviews, talks, and ‘do its’ from the last 27 years. —E.C.
