Delcy Morelos describes herself as “something of an ambassador for Mother Earth, a self-professed healer and sorceress charged with delivering a message about her force, intelligence, and beauty.” Often working with organic materials such as soil and clay, the Columbian artist makes large-scale installations that celebrate the power of the earth and stand against human violence and land abuse. In her first U.S. solo show, Morelos presents two installations, scented with spices and tree resin, El abrazo (The Embrace) and Cielo terrenal (Earthly Heaven). The first, a mass of soil, clay, and ground coconut husks, is like a small floating fortress that one can walk through and touch. In fact, Morelos encourages viewers to caress the structure and connect with it as with the earth. Cielo terrenal is physically and energetically darker. Morelos combines natural elements with industrial waste to create a space of birth and death. In both pieces, she asks us to accept the planet as sacred. —Jeanne Malle
