“This is a story I never expected to be telling,” the travel writer Lydia Gard says in the introduction of her new podcast, Deep Water. The story in question is about a sport she discovered three years ago—freediving—in which swimmers go down as deep as they can, and then return, all in one single breath. Though it might not sound particularly dramatic at first, one begins to understand the appeal after seeing videos of record breakers who’ve descended more than 390 feet below the surface. “I only had to try it once and I was hooked,” says Gard. She hired a coach and got to know the competitive sport’s passionate community. But then she began hearing rumors about a dark side threatening the sport: doping. Deep Water is the result of her investigation. —Jeanne Malle
