Deborah Kass: Painting and Sculpture

Sept 10, 2020 – Feb 28, 2021
835 W Washington Blvd, Chicago, IL 60607, United States

“My work since the late 80s,” the American artist Deborah Kass has said, “specifically questioned what was presented as the ‘natural’ order of things in the history of postwar-N.Y. painting.” Back in the day, veering away from her fellow contemporaries, Kass did the unthinkable: she blended two radical and opposing schools of thought, brash Pop Art and comparatively subdued Minimalism. She was inspired by political events that surrounded her. Today, Kass continues to question the order of things. In this exhibition, sleek sculptures and canvases blare bright color. Kass makes references to the Black Lives Matter protests, the Trump and Obama administrations, and resonant songs and phrases. —E.C.
