David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020

May 23 – Sept 26, 2021
Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BD, United Kingdom

“Do Remember They Can’t Cancel Spring.” This is what David Hockney titled a hopeful bunch of daffodils he drew on his iPad during the pandemic’s fierce first days, and distributed to friends through email. The British artist spent the spring of 2020, where he’d just moved into an old chateau in Normandy, churning out typically colorful drawings on his iPad, a medium he adopted in 2010. More than 100 of these seasonal works, printed on paper, are now going on view. This bright exhibition betokens the solace one finds in the beauty of nature. As the pandemic continues to disrupt daily life, Hockney reminds us that hope springs eternal. —Sabina Vitale
