The English artist David Hockney signs his letters “Love life.” Just before the opening of his show at the Pompidou in Paris, in 2017, he grabbed a paintbrush and painted those two words on a wall at the show’s exit. His explanation? “I love my work. And I think the work has love, actually.” The Holburne exhibition presents works in which Hockney takes delight in details, in the simple lift, and gift, of observation. —Elena Clavarino
