Daniel Lie, a 34-year-old Brazilian-Indonisan artist (who takes they/them pronouns), is fascinated by living things. Not people—“I find that there are many restraints and limitations in terms of human society as an ecosystem,” they said in 2021—but animals, plants, bacteria, mold, and minerals. For the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States, the New Museum has commissioned a site-specific installation for the museum’s lobby. Lie will arrange terracotta vases, hay bales, mud with spores and seeds, and thousands of cut flowers. The organic materials will grow, wilt, decay, sprout, and rot until June. —Jensen Davis
