Damien Hirst’s 2017 installation in Venice, Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, was a decade in the making, one of his most extravagant artistic projects to date. Inspired by the legendary shipwreck of Apistos, a Greek vessel that sank off the coast of Eastern Africa 2,000 years ago, Hirst imagined the treasures one might have found in the rediscovered ship, and then created them—189 hybrid statues and relics that combine the Hellenistic with the modern. At White Cube Hong Kong, some of these works are on view in China for the first time, including the black-bronze sculpture The Severed Head of Medusa. Hirst’s new series of paintings, “The Revelations,” is also on display. —E.C.
