An interest in that limbo between reality and fiction, between the certainty of the past and the question mark of the future, drives the work of Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer. In their latest show, the artist duo “felt drawn to a new diaspora, the young generation of women … adolescents on the cusp of adulthood who have experienced what it means to uproot their reality and sense of self.” The resulting photographs are ethereal and even otherworldly. A young woman in a pink Shayla wraps it with three hands, not two; the limbs of eight dancers are so intertwined you hardly know whose outstretched arm is whose; and a collaged composition of a beauty in a brightly colored dress becomes a puzzle-like portrait of dislocation. —J.V.
