CMS on Tour

Dec 2–11, 2020
號, No. 21-1, Zhongshan South Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100011

Thanks to Taiwan’s singularly effective coronavirus response, the diminutive island republic has emerged from the pandemic, in the words of Fortune, as “the world’s envy.” So much so that today even their concert life has returned to something like normal. Reason enough for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to book a tour there, though the logistics were not easy. Apart from fancy diplomatic footwork and repeated rounds of testing, each participating musician had to endure 14 days (over Thanksgiving yet) in strict isolation. In return, the pianist and co-artistic director Wu Han and a sextet of string virtuosi get to share the jewels of their repertoire with live audiences for the first time in eight months. Four programs in Taipei and Kaohsiung feature masterworks of Beethoven, Schumann, Smetana, Tchaikovsky, and quite a lot more. —M.G.
