Clandestine: The Photo Collection of Pedro Slim

Oct 16, 2021 – Mar 6, 2022
Sandbergplein 1, 1181 ZX Amstelveen, Netherlands

In 1985, the Beirut-born art collector Pedro Slim began collecting photographs, specifically black-and-white photographs that articulate something about the human body. He was primarily interested in boundaries: between feminine and masculine, gay and straight, binary and non-binary. The 300 photographs in this exhibition—taken by 60 artists during the 1970s and 80s—are divided into three sections. The first hones in on changing ideals of beauty; the second looks at people on society’s fringes; the third is dedicated entirely to the work of Arlene Gottfried, Slim’s longtime favorite photographer. Other artists in the show include Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diana Blok, Helmut Newton, and Man Ray. —E.C.
