Filmed in late 2016, City of Lies was pulled just a month before its 2018 premiere. Directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer), the movie recreates a real-life investigation into the murders of rappers Christopher Wallace (a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G.) in 1997 and Tupac Shakur the year before. Starring Johnny Depp as L.A.P.D. detective Russell Poole, Forest Whitaker as journalist Jack Jackson, and Wallace’s mother, Voletta, as herself, the movie is based on Randall Sullivan’s book LAbyrinth, which alleges that corrupt L.A.P.D. cops helped orchestrate Wallace’s killing. City of Lies was shelved following allegations that Depp assaulted a crew member on set, not outside the realm of possibility given his highly-publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard (which Depp lost). But a 2018 Daily Beast article suggests there were darker forces at play—powerful, perhaps L.A.P.D.-affiliated figures who didn’t want the movie to see the light of day. Either way, it’s in theaters now, marking a post-lawsuit return to the screen for Depp as well as a fresh inquiry into the still-unsolved murders of two of America’s biggest rappers. —J.V.
