Citing Black Geographies

Dawoud Bey, Untitled #4 (Leaves and Porch), 2017.

“Space, some will say, is not intrinsically racially specific,” states the curator Romi Crawford, a cultural theorist and professor of visual and critical studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “And yet there are some locations and territories that read obviously and overtly as ‘black space.’” With works by 15 artists—in mediums ranging from drawing, painting, and photography to film and performance—“Citing Black Geographies” investigates the topographies, zones, scenes, and structures that lend themselves to Black connectivity. Reverberating with a shared history and culture, these ‘black spaces’—some tangible, others more obscure—are as varied as the artists who explore them. Among those featured are Nick Cave, Amanda Williams, Rashid Johnson, and Dawoud Bay. —Nyla Gilstrap
