Chinese Whispers

There is so much news coming out of China—trade wars, Taiwan, TikTok—that the West makes little time for the country’s softer stuff, like lifestyle and culture. The Spectator’s twice-monthly China podcast, hosted by its broadcast editor Cindy Yu, fills this gap. Its political coverage, including episodes on China’s relationship with Afghanistan and the country’s backlash against big tech, is fascinating. But the episodes that shine are the deep dives into a daily life that is vastly different from ours, covering subjects such as the Chinese culture of respecting one’s elders; the Chinese people’s love of luxury goods; the rise of Ketamine in China; and, most interestingly, the country’s “snowflake generation,” whose hands-off rebellion against the intensity of the modern workplace has taken young people by storm. —J.V.
