Over the last year, cooped up at his farm in east Germany, the Vietnamese artist Danh Vo dreamt up “Chicxulub,” a project he calls a “pastoral exhibition.” The title comes from the asteroid-impact crater, Chicxulub, which today is buried deep under sediment in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Like the crater, Vo’s exhibition highlights cultural phenomena that are present under the surface. This installation speaks of the seduction and violence of Catholicism, the similarity between religious iconography and global branding, and the unprecedented interconnectedness of today’s world. —E.C.
