In the 1970s and 1980s, Charles Lutyens split his time between his art studio and psychiatric hospitals, where he worked as an art therapist. Lutyens painted the characters who lived within the patients, capturing inner turmoil with lively inflections of color. Many of the characters in his compositions were grouped together in one painting, but their loneliness kept them worlds apart. Lutyens died in 2021, at age 87. This exhibition surveys the entirety of his career. —Elena Clavarino
