Chance the Rapper’s 2019 debut album of sorts—three mixtapes preceeded The Big Day—was inspired “by the day I got married,” he told Beat 1’s Zane Lowe, “and how I was dancing that day.” Chance’s ultra-charismatic persona turned him into the country’s biggest independent rapper, and it imbues his tracks with a sweet optimism that lightens the weighty subjects tackled in his lyrics, from fatherhood, to God, to the ethical responsibilities of adulthood. Fans have called on Chance to make a run for president (he’s publicly rejected a thanks from our current one). Audience’s love him, and the fun at his shows is as infectious as his smile. —C.J.F.
