“Art seems to me to be above all a state of the soul,” said the beloved Belarusian-French artist Marc Chagall (1887–1985). Although his works were not governed by any particular style or medium, they were all intended to be “an expression of love.” Enigmatic and transcendent, his images are like lingering tales from a beautiful dream. There has been a dearth of Chagall in Poland, but due to a recent acquisition, the National Museum in Warsaw now has 14 Chagall works on paper. They employ a wide range of materials, from gouache to tempera, and are proudly displayed in this exhibition. —Thalia Bonas
