Paul Cézanne was referred to as an “artist’s artist.” Picasso called him “the father of us all.” Though categorized as a Post-Impressionist, Cézanne is widely recognized as a nascent modernist, his analytical approach to painting paving the way to Cubism. He died in 1906, and here we are, still in awe of his color palette, his still lifes, and his brushstrokes, so ethereal and yet contained. This major retrospective, the first in the U.S. in more than 25 years, presents Cézannes on loan from collections around the world. Ninety oil paintings, 40 watercolors and drawings, and two sketch books are on view. —Elena Clavarino
