“I find the virtual world more interesting,” the Chinese installation artist Cao Fei told The White Review in 2016. “I really mean that. I can walk around, overhear conversations, speak to anyone I like. I feel freer there.” Not surprisingly, Cao Fei’s installations evoke parallel worlds, virtual realities, in which Cao constructs social experiments and fictional cities. In her first U.K. solo show, Cao teaches lessons about dystopia and utopia, and speaks of the alienating impact of our digital world. —E.C.
