Here’s the come-on: “Spend La Divina’s 100th birthday with the company that is reinterpreting her legacy for the 21st century!” The program begins with Teatro Nuovo’s artistic director Will Crutchfield’s talk, “Why Callas Still Matters.” The working session “Callas for the Future” features singers examining the diva’s recordings not as copycats but as creative interpreters looking for paths of their own. Conrad L. Osborne, author of the magisterial Opera As Opera: The State of the Art, is among the living witnesses for the panel discussion, “We Were There,” who share reminiscences of La Divina on the stage. A trivia contest, dinner, and a concert follow. Speaking of trivia, the advertising copy for the event notes that the venue, El Museo del Barrio, on upper Fifth Avenue, stands “across the street from the soprano’s birthplace.” Where, we wondered, was she born? In the Conservatory Garden? Crutchfield’s reply: “She was born in what was then The Flower Hospital, still standing but now re-named the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Center, 1249 Fifth Avenue.” We’re glad we asked. —Matthew Gurewitsch
