Brett Bigbee originally made his mark in the contemporary art world, winning attention for his hyperrealistic yet muted portraits in the 1990s. Since then, however, taking a “path toward freedom as a visual storyteller,” he has transitioned into a more vibrant and whimsical painting style. Bigbee’s newest solo exhibition features 15 recent works influenced by American folk painting and 16th-century Mughal miniatures. The result is a singular collection of nature scenes, imaginary in subject but rooted in the very real human impulses of temptation and desire. —Lucy Horowitz
