Executed in meticulously beautiful detail, bookbindings were one of the most popular art forms among the 18th-century French elite. Through these decorative works, kings, queens, dukes, and duchesses displayed their refinement and wealth, giving present day viewers a window into evolving decorative trends of the Ancien Régime. Composed of Jayne Wrightsman’s collection, bequeathed to the Morgan Library in 2019, this exhibition also spotlights the women whose taste and collecting influenced society at large—just as Jayne Wrightsman’s did in her own time. —Sabina Vitale
