The Mexican artist Bosco Sodi lives between Oaxaca, Mexico, and New York City, and creates large paintings and beguiling sculptures that capture his Mexican heritage while channeling the natural world. In his paintings, Sodi layers raw pigment with sawdust, pulp wood, and natural fibers, building textured surfaces that look like cracked earth viewed from above. For sculptures, Sodi often takes dirt from the ground, mixes it with water and sand, and makes clay. The idea? “Controlled chaos,” he once said. “Something that is completely unrepeatable.” On view in Antwerp are Sodi’s deeply textured and, in this exhibition, deeply black paintings, which speak to Sodi’s sculptures in the center of the space, alchemic formations of golden stone. —E.C.
