After a four-year layoff, thanks to contract quarrels and creator Charlie Brooker’s own doubts—“I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart,” he reflected in 2020—Black Mirror, the 21st century’s own Twilight Zone, returns to Netflix for its much anticipated sixth installment. With five new episodes featuring the likes of Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Kate Mara, Aaron Paul, and Josh Hartnett among others, Brooker promises a season that challenges his “own core assumptions about what to expect.” He’s even including “new elements,” he says, that he’d “previously sworn blind the show would never do.” Considering the lengths Black Mirror has gone to in pursuit of its shocks, one shouldn’t take Brooker’s forewarning lightly. —Jack Sullivan
