To inaugurate its new Lower East Side gallery, Hashimoto Contemporary is hosting a solo exhibition of works by Bianca Nemelc, a Bronx-based figurative painter. Exploring the connection between nature and the female body, Nemelc overscales her figures—always brown and Black bodies—so that their heads are never in the picture. “I feel like her identity doesn’t matter in the stories that I’m telling,” Nemelc has said of the women. “I think what’s important is that she’s existing and she’s here and she’s very unapologetic.” While the backgrounds in the paintings are often Caribbean, a nod to Nemelc’s heritage, this show features scenery drawn from summertime in the Antarctic. —Jensen Davis
