There are so many reasons to love Gurinder Chadha’s charming British-soccer-rom-com. The 2002 film brought us Keira Knightley in her breakthrough role as the spunky tomboy Jules, who recruits Jess (Parminder Nagra) to join her soccer team. It brought us Jess and Jules’s friendship-slash-rivalry, which has since gained a cult following within the LGBTQ community for its queer undertones. And it brought us the Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, their heartthrob coach (yes, we realize the age difference is problematic). More meaningfully, through Jess’s chafing against her Punjabi parents, the movie is a surprisingly nuanced tale of coming-of-age amid the immigrant experience. —Paulina Prosnitz
