“Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony and music inside me.” This is the Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. “I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest corners. And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum.” From 1880 to 1890, Van Gogh wandered the countryside studying form and movement, using drawing as a method to combat a consuming depression. His oil paintings were often completed after trial drawings, and upon completion Van Gogh would often sketch the finalized work. In this landmark exhibition, which celebrates the museum’s 55th anniversary, an array of sketches as well as three oil paintings by the Dutch master are on view. —E.C.
