Becoming Eve

Tommy Dorfman in Becoming Eve.

466 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, United States

In 2015, a week before the High Holidays, Abby Stein met her father at a synagogue on New York’s Upper West Side. Raised in a Hasidic rabbinical family in Williamsburg, she was about to share news that would forever change her life: at 23, she was coming out to her father as a woman. Four years later, Stein published a memoir about her childhood and transition, which has now been adapted into a play produced by the New York Theater Workshop. Tommy Dorfman portrays Abby, Richard Schiff plays her father, and Brandon Uranowitz is the synagogue’s progressive rabbi, who attempts to explain gender identity through rabbinical theory. The play weaves together conversations from Stein’s upbringing, using puppets to recount events from her childhood, teenage years, and 20s, when she was a woman stuck in an arranged marriage.
