“I am seeking geometrical structures,” the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes has said, “but with freedom of form and imagery taken from different worlds.” These worlds may oppose one another, but they coexist harmoniously on Milhazes’s canvases. Vibrant arabesques and kaleidoscopes in punchy colors hail Brazilian tradition. European design forms and techniques are reminiscent of Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky. The compositions are geometric and precise, yet project Brazilian alegría. In this exhibition, held across MASP, Casa de Vidro, and Itaú Cultural, Milhazes’s collages and paintings from the 1990s onward are on display. —E.C.
