For all those wondering what a post-pandemic theater comeback will look like, here’s a hint. London’s Bridge Theatre is opening with David Hare’s new play, the first of 12 one-person productions that will debut over the next two months in the playhouse’s 250 socially distanced seats. The subject of Beat the Devil is timely: the playwright was one of nearly 20,000 Brits to contract the coronavirus in March—on the same day, it just so happens, that the U.K. government decided (belatedly) to lock down. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Hare’s “covid monologue” evokes the fear and uncertainty of those early days. —J.V.
