Balanchine's Ballets Russes: Ballet West

Oct 25 – Nov 2, 2019
50 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101, United States

This wonderful program consists of George Balanchine’s first two masterpieces—1928’s Apollo and 1929’s The Prodigal Son. It begins with an even earlier piece, Le Chant du Rossignol (The Song of the Nightingale), which Balanchine choreographed in 1925. Deemed lost, the ballet was reconstructed by the team of Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer. Receiving its U.S. premiere at Ballet West, the restored Rossignol offers a glimpse of Balanchine still in the process of becoming. Igor Stravinsky’s score, started before and finished after The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring, is very much a member of that family. —L.J.
