Bags: Inside Out

Nov 21, 2020 – Jan 16, 2022
Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL, UK

Trends in the fast-paced sphere of fashion are getting increasingly hard to predict, but given the basic human propensity for carrying stuff around, the handbag—even ones carried solely as an accessory, like the matchbox-sized Valentino that American singer Lizzo held daintily between two fingers at the 2019 AMAs—is one thing that will never go out of style. A new exhibition celebrates bags over the centuries, with highlights that include a 16th-century burse for the Great Seal of England, a mid-20th-century dowry bag, a 1910 Lemière opera bag—contents included—and a purple sequined “baguette bag” by Fendi, circa 2000. —J.V.
