Richard Avedon transformed the fashion photograph, moving it from a placid “sitting” to a kinetic “shoot.” His black-and-white photographs for Alexey Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar and Alexander Liberman at Vogue are permeated with life, his subjects laughing, chatting, playing while he captures their energy with his lens. Think of the Paris spreads of Suzy Parker in 1956, or Gianni Versace’s Spring-Summer campaign in 1980. Avedon was born in 1923 and would have turned 100 this year. To celebrate his centenary, Gagosian has asked 150 artists, designers, musicians, and fashion-world representatives to each select their favorite Avedon photograph. Among the participants are Hilton Als, Naomi Campbell, Elton John, Spike Lee, Kate Moss, and Christy Turlington. —Elena Clavarino
