What will Ukraine look like after the war? The Ukrainian director Valentyn Vasyanovych answered that question in 2019, when his Atlantis premiered at the Venice Film Festival. A work of fiction, the movie imagines Ukraine in 2025—victorious against Russia but riddled with loss. Its protagonist, a soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder, works to exhume the bodies of his fellow soldiers. Atlantis won the Horizons section, yet as often happens it got lost in the noise. Now, with the world’s eyes on the war in Ukraine, Atlantis has re-emerged, looking more like a documentary, its dire warning too late. Available on iTunes, MUBI, and Amazon Prime, the movie will be released in theaters in the coming months. —Clara Molot
