Aspettando l'Imperatore: Monumenti, Archeologia e Urbanistica nella Roma di Napoleone, 1809–1814

Dec 19, 2019 – May 31, 2020
Piazza di Ponte Umberto I, 1, 00186 Roma RM, Italy

Napoleon’s army conquered Rome in 1808, and for the next five years considered the ancient city part of its expanding empire. More than 50 works, from paintings to archaeological and architectural models, are collected to recreate the moment in time when Romans prepared to welcome Napoleon—who, in the end, never showed up—by employing Italian and French architects to modernize the city while maintaining its indelible sense of history and identity. —J.V.
