Ashley Bickerton: Susie's Mother Tongue

Sena, Cherry, and Kinez, by Ashley Bickerton.

Sept 8 – Oct 14, 2023
522 W 21st St, New York, NY 10011

The artist Ashley Bickerton died last year, at 63, of ALS. Before his death, he traveled to Gagosian’s New York gallery and made plans for this exhibition. He saw it as an overview of his four-decade career. Bickerton got his start in the late 1980s in New York, where he attracted attention with his ironic constructions on themes of consumerism. Living part-time in Bali since 1993, where between surf sessions his work took an exotic turn, he moved on to tropical surrealism. In recent years, Bickerton brought his heterogeneous practice together in paintings that often focused on island culture and the environment. In the late artist’s first exhibition with Gagosian, his “Blur” paintings are on view for the first time. Come celebrate his vision. —Elena Clavarino
