Though the Hong Kong border reopened in April last year, travel was still complicated for patrons, collectors, and gallerists alike. This year, Art Basel is back in earnest, with a step up from 100 exhibiting galleries in 2021 to 177 in 2023—including all the mainstays, from Gagosian to Hauser & Wirth to David Zwirner to Jeffrey Deitch. Encounters, the fair’s section dedicated to large-scale work, is also back on the calendar. Other highlights include Conversations, a panel discussion hosted by Jen Hua, Chairman China for Sotheby’s; Alan Lau, arts patron; and Rebecca Wei, the co-founder of LGDR & Wei.
