Araki

May 26 – Aug 29, 2021
Albertinaplatz 1, 1010 Wien, Austria

A nonconformist by nature, Nobuyoshi Araki, when he entered Chiba University in 1959, found its photography program uninspiring. After graduation, he waffled through commercial jobs with little conviction. In the late 60s, however, the death of his father, and his encounter with his future wife, paved the way for his “I-Photography”—a style of documentary photography influenced by the Japanese avant-garde. Since those early days, Araki’s work has gained both fame and notoriety, moving between poetic still lifes and quotidian scenes to images of bondage that walk a fine line between erotica and pornography. “Araki” places the photographer’s long-running autobiographical series “Sentimental Journey” (1971–2017) at the center of the show. It begins with Araki’s honeymoon, and ends in the years subsequent to his wife’s untimely death. —E.C.
