News flash! Anthony Roth Costanzo is not The Marriage of Figaro. The star countertenor is, however, an artistic chameleon of so many colors that even his most besotted fan may have trouble with some of his choices. Case in point: the insufferable mash-up of opera and gender-bending cabaret he cooked up with Justin Vivian Bond under the title Only An Octave Apart back when we were all wearing masks (or making a point of refusing to). Yet there, too, Costanzo delivered the occasional bright spot. Brightest of the bunch: the cat-and-mouse duet for Susanna and the Count from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, mimed and sung by the lone Costanzo with the aid of a gauze curtain. This summer, Costanzo returns to that unsurpassed masterpiece, this time hogging all the principal parts (what fun his supporting cast will have). But was less more? Will more be less? Having booked Anthony Roth Costanzo Is The Marriage of Figaro for a whopping four weeks, Little Island’s artistic director Zack Winokur must be feeling pretty cocky, and he’s probably right. The venue is tiny, and Costanzo’s fan base is huge. —Matthew Gurewitsch
