“At Voorlinden,” says Suzanne Swarts, the museum’s director, “you discover Anselm Kiefer as a playful man, a boundless artist who keeps exploring, breaking down and building up.” Kiefer worked closely with Voorlinden on this exhibition, which features installations, paintings, sculptures, and the artist’s books. Known for magisterial canvases and his varied interests in literature, philosophy, history, and mythology, here Kiefer reveals work of the past 15 years, the majority of which has never been shown to the public. Mixing oils with lead, old bicycle parts, leaves, sticks, and hay, Kiefer combines conventional and quotidian materials in ways that urge viewers to enter his world—analytical, outdoor, and haunted by history. —Jeanne Malle
