“I’m always taking objects from another place,” Annette Lemieux says of the found images she uses in her art. “I don’t like the term appropriation, I call them duets.” This is Lemieux’s signature technique. Newspaper clippings, pictures, patterns, and photographs are lifted from disparate sources and placed into powerfully-controlled collages. Indeed, a pair of highly organized collage grids—one in red and white, the other black and white—contain myriad eyes, as if to say that “Broken,” Lemeieux’s first solo show in Berlin, is all about seeing. —E.C.
