“And we marched/ and we started/ ‘No Justice No Peace.’” This is the voice of a community activist—one of many voices in Anna Deveare Smith’s play Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992—and she’s recalling the murder of Latasha Harlins by a Korean grocery clerk. Smith’s one-woman show details what followed both the slaying of Harlins and the brutal beating of Rodney King, and is based on some 300 people she interviewed. In the wake of George Floyd’s killing by police in Minneapolis, Smith joins the Y’s “Confronts Hates” programming to discuss her play and 2018’s Notes from the Field, which examines racial inequality in the justice system. A filmed version of Smith’s original performance of Twilight is now available to stream on PBS; a film based on Notes From the Field is available to view on HBO’s streaming platforms. —C.J.F.
