The Puerto Rican-born artist Angel Otero has reached a turning point in his career. Known for grand, abstract canvases, he is moving toward the figurative, aiming to capture memories. Otero imbues common household items with bright color and a surrealist charm. His canvases are quite textured and can appear almost torn, made through a process Otero calls “skins”—layers that he allows to almost dry before peeling off chunks or strands. In his first solo show with Hauser & Wirth, Otero unveils this new development, a next chapter in his career. —Clara Molot
